Collection of 84 handwritten life insurance policy application letters, with integral stampless address leaves, dated January
5, 1849 to January 14, 1852. Most letters were written by agents of the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company to company
Secretary (later President) Guy R. Phelps in Hartford, Connecticut, about insuring emigrants traveling to California during
the Gold Rush. The company agents write from New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Maryland,
Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. Also includes
one printed circular (dated March 18, 1850) limiting the rates of commissions earned on policies for California to 5%, that
policies will only be written for routes by sea, from Chagres to Panama or around Cape Horn, and that life insurance applications
for anyone over 60 years of age will be declined.
